With the release of next-gen consoles right around the corner, We thought it would be good to explore some of the reasons for keeping your current consoles around. There are some great games on the horizon for current generation platforms. It might be tempting to trade in your console for that GameStop credit towards your shiny new Xbox One or PS4, but there are more than a few reasons to keep your Xbox 360 or PS3 around for a while longer.
Neither the Xbox One or PS4 are backwards compatible. The only way to play your current game library is to keep your current console. If that isn’t reason enough, each of the Frag Tag crew have made a short list of awesome games only launching on current-gen consoles.
4 GAMES FROM JAYRAY:
Grand Theft Auto Online (Xbox 360 & PS3) Available Now In GTA5 -
GTA V is now in the hands of millions of gamers world wide. It has received amazing reviews from just about everywhere you could possibly look, but as mentioned before – this is only half of the package. GTA Online will be constantly updated with loads of content and should be enough to keep even the busiest gamers locked into Los Santos for months.
Beyond: Two Souls (PS3 exclusive) Coming October 8th, 2013 -
The creators of Heavy Rain are finally releasing their heavily anticipated new game. This game looks absolutely stunning, and we would not expect anything less from Quantic Dream. Beyond is centered around Jodie Holmes, and takes you through 15 years of her life on a personal journey to discover the meaning of Aiden, a supernatural entity who has been linked to Jodie for most of her life.
Batman: Arkham Origins (Xbox 360 & PS3) Coming October 25th, 2013 -
The Arkham series has become one of the best and most polished series in gaming. Under the guidance of a new developer, the game looks just as stunning as the previous two did. Origins is a prequel to the first 2 entries, featuring a younger Batman with a bounty placed on his head by a crime lord named Black Mask. There is little doubt in my mind that this game will not disappoint.
Dark Souls II (Xbox 360 & PS3) Coming March 11th, 2014 -
If you are a fan of Skyrim and played it all the time, but often felt yourself thinking “I wish this game was 1000x more difficult”, then Dark Souls is a game that you will enjoy for a very long time as you die… over and over and over again.
4 GAMES FROM PRADIUS:
Fable Anniversary (Xbox 360 exclusive) Coming February 2014 -
This will be a fully re-mastered version of Fable: The Lost Chapters. It will feature completely overhauled HD graphics and an achievements system. If you never played the first Fable on the original Xbox, then you are in for a treat.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 (Xbox 360 & PS3) Release Date TBA 2014 -
The first Lords of Shadow was definitely a surprise and turned out to be one of the best games from 2010. If you are a Castlevania fan, or just enjoy games featuring God of War styled combat, then Lords of Shadow 2 is just for you. If you haven’t played the first, then I suggest you pick that up in the meantime and give it a go; you won’t be dissapointed.
Murdered: Soul Suspect (Xbox 360 & PS3) Coming Q2 2014 -
This is a new IP and not a lot is known about it, but the screenshots released so far look very promising. You will play as Detective Ronan O’Connor, who is currently dead and uses his ghostly powers to solve his own murder. Along the way, you will be combating demonic creatures. The game also appears to be set in the 1940′s and has a very LA Noire look to it.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (Xbox 360 & PS3) Coming February 11, 2014 -
The final entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection of Final Fantasy. Lightning Returns contains a very different version of the gameplay system from 13 and 13-2, with a much more action-oriented battle system. The game takes place over 500 years after 13-2. Lightning has awakened from a self-imposed hibernation with only 13 days before the world ends forever. This being the last game to feature Lightning and friends, I suspect the ending will be insane.
4 GAMES FROM MATTERAFACT:
South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360 & PS3) Coming December 10th, 2013 -
Matt and Trey are hilarious, and they are fully behind The Stick of Truth. While it has been delayed a few times, most of that has been due to THQ shutting its doors and finding a new home at Deep Silver. That being said, South Park has a ton of potential, being a full RPG with every South Park character. Each character is fully voiced by their original voice actors from the TV show. I can’t think of anything a fan of the show would want more.
Far Cry Classic (Xbox 360 only) Release Date TBA 2013 -
This is an HD remake of the original Far Cry, scheduled for release on the Xbox Live Arcade sometime in the near future. If you recently played and enjoyed Far Cry 3, then this will be a great way to explore the roots of the series with a fresh coat of paint, and for a cheap price.
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (Xbox 360 & PS3) Coming October 18th, 2013 -
This one will be on next-gen consoles too, but I doubt there will be much of a difference in graphical quality. LEGO games are always a ton of fun, especially if you have a co-op partner to play with. In the game, SHIELD director Nick Fury has called upon the superheroes of Marvel Universe to retrieve blocks of immense power, which are currently being seeked out by Doctor Doom to make a “Doom Ray” weapon. You will play as characters such as Spiderman, Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America on your mission to collect these blocks before they are captured by the Marvel villains.
The Wolf Among Us (Xbox 360 & PS3) Episode 1 coming October, 2013 -
This game is being developed by Telltale and will be very similar to their popular episodic game adaption of The Walking Dead. You will play as Bigby Wolf and will constantly be trying to decide should you give in to the wolf side, or try to get along and keep everybody safe. You try to keep fairy tale characters, like the Three Little Pigs and Mr. Toad from being detected by the Mundies. Wolf Among Us will be broken up into 5 “episodes”, similar to first season of The Walking Dead.
There are also some very significant DLC expansions coming to recent games from earlier this year. Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us are on that list. The only way you will be able to get your hands on these is to keep hold of your Xbox 360 or PS3.
That’s over 12 reasons to keep your current generation consoles. Think twice before taking that store credit at GameStop, as there is a reason they want you to trade these in for new consoles. While it might be tempting to get that discount, you will pay the far greater price of missing out on some fantastic games in the long run.
